Franklin Armstrong
Franklin P. Armstrong Jr., 79, of Washburn, died January 6 at St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield.
Mr. Armstrong was born August 30, 1924, in Republic, the son of Franklin P. Armstrong Sr. and Blanche Watson Armstrong. He helped build Camp Crowder and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a dairy farmer, operated a service station on Highway 37 in Washburn in the early 1950s, owned and operated a grocery store in Washburn and a coinomatic laundry in Cassville in the early 1960s, and built and operated a store for several years on Highway 90 in Washburn. He raised quarter horses for 10 years. He was postmaster in Washburn for several years. He was president of the Southwest Board of Education from 1962 to 1966 and became a member of the Barry Electric Cooperative in 1968. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Washburn.
He was first married to Mary Lou Nelson (1928-2004).
In 1984 he married June Charles, and she preceded him in death November 17, 1999.
Survivors include one son, Ed Armstrong of Exeter; one step-daughter, Debbie Yarnall of Cassville; one sister, Christine Schell of Washburn; one grandchild and three step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Stone and Eleanor Swindle.
Services were 1 p.m. today, January 9, at Fohn Chapel in Cassville with Ken West and Rick Hendrix officiating. Burial with military honors was in Washburn Prairie Cemetery under the direction of Fohn Funeral Home
