Actor. Fondly remembered for his role as Harry Bentley (the English neighbor) in the television comedy series "The Jeffersons". Born in Silver City, New Mexico and raised in Boston, he studied literature at Suffolk University. He began his stage career during the early-1960s and was a player with the Theatre Company of Boston before appearing regularly in films and television. Among his other television credits are "Sesame Street" (as 'The Mad Painter'), "Maude", "Kojak" and "Murder, She Wrote". His motion picture credits include "The Virgin President" (1968), "Cold Turkey" (1971), "They Might Be Giants" (1971), "Jeremiah Johnson" (1972), "Up the Sandbox" (1972), "The Front Page" (1974), "The Goodbye Girl" (1977), "This Is Spinal Tap" (1984) and "The Freshman" (1990). Among his Broadway credits are "Bad Habits" (1974), "Hughie" (1996) and "The Music Man" (2000 to 2001). In addition, Benedict was a stage director for many on and Off-Broadway productions. He died at the age of 70 at Martha's Vineyard.
