James Henry Adams of West 2nd Street, was born in Howell County Aug 15, 1877, the son of the late Leonard and Mary Adams, early residents of the county, and died at 3:15 a m Thursday at the Nevada City Hospital. Mr. Adams had been in Nevada for several days visiting his son Jewell when he took pneumonia. He was much improved when he suffered a heart attack and died.
Mr. Adams had been a farmer and stockman in Howell County all his life and for many years operated a large ranch east of West Plains. For three years he was associated with his brothers Cletus and Albert, in operating the Southern Scrum Company, which they purchased from the Workman family. He also taught school in the county, having several terms at the Adams and Summers schools. He had been a member of the Baptist Church since early manhood.
Fifty-five years ago he was married at Couch to Cora Easley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Millington Easley of Oregon County, who died June 9, 1948. A daughter, Elva, died in June 1928.
In 1939 he married Alice Johnson who survives him. Other survivors are his son, Jewell; four brothers, Orville, George and Ed of West Plains and Clint of Atlanta, Ga., who arrived Friday with his wife; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; and three stepchildren, Delbert and Burl Johnson of West Plains and Mrs. Gordon Carroll of St Louis.
Two brothers, Cletus and Albert, and two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Lambert and Mrs. Lyman Garrett, preceded him in death.
The body was brought to West Plains Thursday afternoon by Robertson ambulance and his son and wife arrived Friday.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. W. E. Marcum officiating, assisted by the Rev Reedy. Burial was in Howell Valley cemetery beside his first wife.
