Helen Louise James, known as Louise, was born July 2nd, 1916 in rural Vermillion to Elon and Alma Beckline Eklund. She attended Marshalltown school through 9th grade, graduated from Vermillion High School in 1934 and attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux City, IA. Upon completion of school, she worked as a secretary for James Trucking in Sioux City. Louise was united in marriage to Denton H. James on April 29, 1939 in Vermillion, SD. The couple moved to Chicago, IL where she worked for Harris Forwarding and Trust. In 1945, they returned to this area to farm.
Louise was a devoted farm wife, and gave piano lessons to area students for 30 years. Denton died in 1982. In 1987, Louise moved into Beresford where she resided until the time of her death. She was an active member of Dalesburg Baptist Church, Beresford Study Club and local volunteer, using her musical talents to entertain residents at the Bethesda Home for the Aged for 25 years. Louise gave years of service at the Civic Center of Beresford, where she was the first volunteer. Other than the love for her family, some of her other interests were walking, first on old Highway 77 in front of their farm home, and later the streets of Beresford carrying her stick to fend off dogs. Louise loved trees and admired every tree along her walking path. She also loved crocheting Afghans and doing crossword puzzles.
Louise is survived by her two children, Bob (Marlene), Beresford and Sue (Dennis) Miller, Bloomington, IL; 5 grandsons, Ryan (Steph) James, Columbus, OH; Dean (Maria) Miller, Alexandria, VA; Kyle (Katie) James, Lincoln, NE; Paul Miller and special friend Ivana Radmilo, Chicago, IL; Troy (Renee) James, Alcester, SD and 3 great grand- daughters, Cally and Kendyl James, Columbus, OH and Avery James, Lincoln, NE; a sister-in-law, Leone Christopherson, Vermillion, SD; and a brother-in-law, Milford (Rosemary) Jacobson, Milwaukee, WI, nieces, nephews and host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Judy Lee, one brother, three sisters and one nephew.
