He was the fourth son of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, and his wife, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, born Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, a daughter of Grand Duke Frederick Francis II, of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Grand Duke Andrei was a grandson of Tsar Alexander II.
