Joel Thompson Powell, son of James Lucas Powell and Elizabeth Lamar. He was named after his uncle Joel Thompson Lamar. Married Elizabeth Balser in 1855 and fathered two children William and Charles.

Joel enlisted into the Union Army; Company D, 25th Regiment Indiana Infantry as a Corporal on August 19, 1861 in Evansville, Indiana. He served in the army and fought in the battle at Shiloh and he eventually became a Sergeant. He was mustered out on November 16, 1864 in Nashville, Tennessee; but unfortunately he died somehow three days later on November 19, 1864 in Nashville and was buried in the National Cemetery there.
