When Magarity had about 100 volunteers, he took his company to Peoria, Illinois where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1864, 96 of Magarity's volunteers were mustered into service as Co. A of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th marched through the streets of Peoria to the railroad depot and boarded the cars for Indiana and Kentucky. About this time, Samuel became quite ill and was sent to an Army Hospital in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Samuel died there about Nov. 5, 1862. His earthly remains were initially buried there in Bowling Green, but shortly after the war his remains were exhumed and moved to the National Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee. Though his name is spelled Samuel Rice, rather than Grice, his earthly remains are believed to lie in Plot N, Grave #10217.

(I would enjoy hearing from anyone, especially Grice family descendants, who might be able to add any information about the Grice family. Though I do not believe that Samuel lived long enough to have a portrait made, I would love to get a copy of any photograph that may still exist of Samuel W. Grice if he ever posed for one and if a copy still exists, for his Find A Grave site and for the local Historical Society. Sincerely, Baxter)
