John was the son of William and Joanna (Miller) Eastman. He married Thankful Elizabeth Campbell on July 27, 1809 in South Hero, Grand Isle Co., Vermont. She was the daughter of William Jr. and Elizabeth (Hinds) Campbell, born April 7, 1789 in South Hero and died June 6, 1882. They lived in various locations (Attica, NY, Utica, NY, Enfield, N.H., and lastly, Cambria, New York), having their eleven children along the way.
