Isaac Newton Strickler is almost certainly not the father of this soldier. The gravestone on that memorial is a standard government issue gravestone for Union Civil War soldiers. Even though that memorial [believed incorrectly] shows the dates for John's father, it is believed that it is for the Isaac Strickler (Stricklin) who was a patient at two National Veterans Homes, a fellow Civil War soldier born about the same time as John, who probably was his brother. The pension file for Jane, John's mother, has an affidavit submitted by Isaac N. Strickler. Also she states in her information that her husband Isaac had been dead for 20 years, so he was not the Isaac Strickler who signed the affidavit.

The information below is from the records on the State of Illinois database, and it shows that this soldier was born in PA on or about 1837. His mother's name was Jane Strickler, who was born about 1801 and was residing in Marion, Missouri, when the pension application was filed.
