US Congressman. A Yale graduate of classical studies in 1808, he was admitted to the bar in 1810 and established his practice in New Haven. He was a member of Connecticut's House of Representatives from 1820 to 1825; serving as speaker during the last two years. He was elected for four consecutive terms in the US House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1825 through March 3, 1833. Declining a renomination, he resumed his law practice and was appointed the state's attorney for New Haven County in 1833; he refused a nomination to the US Senate in 1835. At the request of President Polk, he was appointed the Minister Plenipotentiary to the Russian court from August 8, 1846 until July 1, 1848; he resigned to again resume his law practice. In 1851 he was the major of New Haven and retired from public life in 1864.
