Imogene "Jean" Grant, of Floral City passed away December 9, 2008. Born May 8, 1926 in Star City, Alabama, the seventh of seven children born to William Champ Copeland and Frances Townson Copeland.
She graduated from Oneonta, Alabama High School prior to moving to Miami in 1946 where she worked for Southern Bell Telephone & Telegraph Company. She, her husband, George and two sons moved to Floral City in 1971. And soon became active in community affairs, serving on the Board of Directors of the Citrus County Fair Association for three years before being hired as manager in 1976. She held that position until 2006 when she was named Fair Manager Emeritus. She was very active in the Florida Federation of Fairs, holding many offices, including President in 1986. In 1997 she was elected to the Federation's Hall of Fame for her contributions to the Fair industry. In 2007 Jean was named Citrus County Citizen of the Year and has received many awards in recognition of her service with United Way, the American Cancer Society, Chamber of Commerce, Sertoma, and others. March 20, 2007 was declared Jean Grant Appreciation Day at the Citrus County Fair. Hundreds of well wishers from throughout the state and county attended.
She was a founding board member of the United Way of Citrus County and has worked for Citrus United Basket (CUB) since its inception in 1978, most recently serving as President. She was one of the first women to be elected to the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners, in 1978, serving two terms. She was always an advocate for the aged, and served on the board of the Mid-Florida Area Agency on Aging for more than 15 years.
Throughout her recent battle with cancer this quote from a 2007 Chronicle editorial still stands, "she has maintained that hallmark Jean Grant characteristic wit, sense of humor and forthrightness. In the end, let it be said she cared, and she proved it."
