Born on 7th December 1897 at Lower Bebington, Merseyside,England.He had 4 Brothers and 3 Sisters.

He joined the Royal Navy on 11th November 1914 at HMS Ganges.On 31st May 1916 he was serving on board HMS Warspite which took part in the Famous Battle of Jutland of World War One. He also served on board HMS Bee, Cockchafer, Delhi, Douglas, and Emperor of India.

On 21st April 1928 he Married Florence Ethel Shaw at St.Lukes church, Camberwell, London.

He served throughout World War Two in the Royal Fleet Reserve as a Leading Seaman Gunners Mate. He saw active service in the Far East and was awarded the Burma Star. He was a member of the Burma Star Association.

After the War he worked as a Postman for the Post Office.He was awarded the Imperial Service Medal for 25 year's Service on 26th Jan 1962 which was Gazetted in the supplement 42581, Page 681, Olivant, Richard John, Postman, London Postal Region.

On 21st April 1978 he celebrated his Golden Wedding Anniversary having been married to Florence for 50 years.

He was a member of the Camberwell Royal Naval Association for many years where he used to meet up with old Oppo's for a Tot or two.

His full Medal entitlement is 1914/15 Star, British War Medal 1914/20, Victory Medal 1914/19, 1939/45 Star, Burma Star 1939/45, Defence Medal 1939/45, War Medal 1939/45, Imperial Service Medal and Royal Fleet Reserve Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.A total of 9 Medals throughout two World Wars.

He collapsed and fell following a Severe Stroke at his home in Camberwell.He died on 19th June 1981 at St.Francis Hospital, East Dulwich, London.

His Funeral was held on 26th June 1981 at Honor Oak Crematorium, Camberwell, London. He was given a Military style Funeral with the Coffin draped in the Union Flag. The service was attended by his Sister Margaret and Niece Maisy Both from Liverpool. His Widow, Florence, Daughter Joan and her family including Graham Parsons, his Grandson. Standard Bearer's and members of the Royal Naval Association, Camberwell Branch also attended.

Following Cremation, his ashes were placed into a Casket made by Officers at the Faslane Naval Base in Scotland.He was buried at Sea at Scapa Flow from a Minesweeper on 1st December 1981.
