Clement Manly Llewellyn was born in Dobson, North Carolina, the son of James and Lula Waugh Llewellyn. Llewellyn attended Oak Ridge Military Institute and graduated from the University of North Carolina and its law school. At the university he was captain of the baseball team during the year it won 23 games. Llewellyn was the first president of the U. N. C. Monogram Club. He was also a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the Theta Chi fraternity and the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity. In 1922, he pitched for the New York Yankees and was a teammate of Babe Ruth. Llewellyn played for the Southern and Sally leagues from 1923 to 1926. In 1925, he married Ruth Pitchford Llewellyn and a year later he moved his family to Concord, NC to manage the Concord Weavers Baseball Club. He opened a law practice and served as the attorney for Cabarrus County and as Concord city judge. Llewellyn was President of the North Carolina State League and President of the Tri-State League (1946-51). In 1951, he was commissioner of the Junior World Series and worked through the years to obtain college scholarships for young ballplayers. Llewellyn was active in his community where he was a member of First Baptist Church, a member of Stokes Lodge No. 32, AF & AM and a Shriner. He died at Charlotte Memorial Hospital from an aortic aneurism on November 27, 1969 at age 74. Llewellyn was the senior partner at the law firm of Llewellyn, McKenzie & Llewellyn and was serving as a Superior Court Judge at the time of his death.
