RAY LENTZ LYERLY of Gainesville, died Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at North Florida Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Ray was born in Concord, North Carolina on July 23, 1923 to Rev. William and Helen Lentz Lyerly. Ray graduated second in his class from North Carolina State College in 1943 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In college, he was a member of the Blue Key Society, Phi Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Tau Beta Pi. After college, Ray joined the US Merchant Marines as an Engineering Officer and served 2 years during World War II. When the war ended, Ray was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant with several awards. Ray then entered graduate school at Columbia University in New York City, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Ray spent most of his adult life in Dunedin, Florida, where until 1971 he worked as a Heat Transfer Engineer for the General Nuclear Engineering Corporation. When the firm relocated to Connecticut, Ray started his own independent practice of nuclear power plant engineering, Ray L. Lyerly, P.E., Consulting Engineer.

Ray retired in 2001 and in 2005 he moved to Gainesville, Florida, where he spent the rest of his life with his daughter Belinda and her family, including the great grandchildren that he adored so much.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, June, a daughter, Penny Abrey, and two brothers Albert and William Lyerly.

Ray is survived by his children Belinda Lyerly Rogers and husband, Tim, of Gainesville, daughter Diana Lyerly of Gainesville, son Alan Lyerly, of Gainesville, and son-in-law Steven Abrey of Plano, Texas; his brother Harvey Lyerly and wife Shirley of Concord, North Carolina; Grandchildren Ty Rogers and wife Suzanne of Jacksonville, Carrie Rogers Lund and husband Russell of Newberry, Ryan Abrey of Dallas, Texas, Jared Rogers and wife Kylie of Tallahassee, Bonnie Rogers Northsea and husband Mike of Gainesville, and Kyle Rogers of Gainesville; and Great-Grandchildren Haylee, Justin, and Jesse James Lund of Newberry and Camden Rogers of Tallahassee.

A Graveside Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater, Florida at 1:30PM. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 12, 2008 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at WILLIAMS-THOMAS WESTAREA, 823 143rd Street, Newberry/Gainesville, FL. Arrangements are under the care of Williams-Thomas Westarea.
