James resided in Groton. He was a freeman in 1705; brander of horses; Constable in 1707; selectman from 1731-1742; often the moderator; deputy, 1715-31; Justice of the Peace 1726-1735; guardian of the Pequot Indians. He was also ensign of the 1st company 1716; lieutenant 1721, captain 1728.
