It is my pleasure to present to you a brief biography of Basil Greenstreet. Basil is the father of Beverly who is the best friend of my sister Judith (Koloadin nee Hodgson). Judith could not attend the funderal of Basil so I went instead being the only family member left in New Zealand. I remember Basil, when as a very young boy, playing in his back yard while my parents were inside socialising. He was such a 'big' man to me and I had emmense respect for him. I will always remember that smile. Basil was the first of New Zealand's Special Air Service (SAS) in the second world war. He was in a special force called the 'Long Range Desert Group' (LRDG). In this group were only New Zealanders as they were known for their ability to fix anything (with anything) and were able to adapt to any situation. This is not a put down to other countries elite forces it is just that at the time we (being Kiwis) were the best at this kind of fighting. We were highly respected. Basil would never talk of the war even if he was asked. Following the war he headed many organisations to assist returned servicemen. He was also president of his RSA (returned services Assn)for many years and continued to help others in need. That was the type of man he was. Basil passed away after a prolonged illness (bowel cancer). Thank you Basil for being YOU. You will never be forgotten. Rest in peace knowing you contributed to what this world is today.
GOD BLESS
