Forester. Francis Kennedy was the eldest child of Sidney and Margaret McMahon Kennedy. He graduated from Emporium High School and then applied to and was accepted at the Forestry School at Mt. Alto for one year. Kennedy joined the United States Army on January 1, 1943. He trained at Camp Hale, Colorado and then served successively with with Co C 86th Moutain Inf, Headquarters Co 3rd Bn 85th Mountain Inf, Co I 85th Mtn Inf, all with the 10th Mountain through Italy. Serving as Squad Leader and holding the rank of Staff Sergeant, he was wounded in the leg at Mt. Belvedere, Italy. For some time he was listed as missing; his father was the telegrapher on duty who took the message to the family informing them. He was discharged from the service at Halloran General Hospital in New York City on July 3, 1946. For his service he was awarded the Bronze Star, the European Theater of Operations Medal with 2 Battle Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After the war, he attended the Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 1949. He married Janenne Fulton at St Mark's Church in Driftwood Pennsylvania on 7 August 1950. They raised a family of two children, Patrick and Evelyn. He retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources in 1989. The Francis X Kennedy Ski Trail, known as the FXK, a 4.6 mile loop, is named for him.
