John grew up in Rutland, Vermont. He graduated from RHS in 1955 and enlisted in the U.S.AirForce the same year. He received basic training at Sampson Air Base, Geneva, NY. While stationed as a combat physical trainer at Schilling Air Base in Salina, KS, he spent his evenings taking classes at local colleges and acting in theatre. After completing his service in the Air Force, he attended the University of Vermont for the academic year 1959-60.
In 1960 he married Margaret Balaun in Salina. They lived in Junction City, KS, where Margaret was a teacher in the Senior High School. John finished his college degree and did graduate work in theatre at nearby Kansas State University.
In 1963 they moved to his beloved Vermont and made their home in Newfane. John and his wife Margaret both taught for many years at Leland and Gray in Townshend. They had a daughter, Sarah (b.1967), and a son, Seth (b.1970). John became renowned for his outstanding theatrical productions and his challenging expectations of students. "He taught us to think."
After leaving Leland and Gray, he applied his teaching skills in the business world. He married Elaine Druke; they made their home first in Underhill, then Panton. He became a consultant, working in personnel training for business, as well as in the development of career education for the State Department of Education. He received the "Lift America Award for Excellence in Employee Education" at Vermont Heating and Ventilating Company. He is a founding member of both "Project Assist" and "Vermont Construction Career Council."
In line with generations of ancestors traditionally dedicated to community, he served on the Town of Newfane Planning Commission and the Windham County Extension Service Advisory Board for many years. He was later named a Paul Harris Fellow, an award of the Vergennes Rotary Club. He was a writer throughout his adult life. In addition to his plays and poems, he has produced a novel based on Vermont history and has written articles for outdoors magazines including "Game Journal," "Shooting Sportsman," and "Gray's Sporting Journal."
