Cecil Meryl Hayes married Fay Elvira Byrum on July 27, 1932 in Lancaster, Missouri. Faye Elvira Byrum was the daughter of Charles Benjemmon and Clara Edna (Lathrop) Byrum. Cecil and Fay Hayes had no children.

Cecil Merl Hayes, 93 of Martinsburg died Tues., June 5, 1990 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. He lived and died at the Health Center in Sigourney since July 1985.

He was born February 27, 1897, near Hayesville, to Jacob Leeman and Mary Ellen Eckelberry Hayes. He married Fay Elvira Byrum on July 27, 1932 in Lancaster, MO. He attended Hayesville School and lived near Hayesville for 45 years. He had lived south of Cantril, in Missouri and in Martinsburg. He worked on the railroad for several years at Hayesville, Sigourney, Hedrick and Martinsburg.

His parents; a brother. Lacey; a sister Grace Jones and an infant sister, Nina Belle, preceded him in death.

Funeral; service was held Friday, June 8 at 2 P.M. at Mount Zion Church Northwest of Martinsburg with the Rev. Clayton Paxton.

Honorary pallbearers were Frank Carter, Clifford Barcus, Everett Whitten, Harry Crane, Owen Byrum, Holland Gilliland, Keith Brainard, Richard Withers, Firman McBeth Sr. Active pallbearers were Fred McBeth, Duane McBeth, Jason McBeth, Firm E. McBeth, Forest McBeth, and LaVern Burtlow. Pianist was Vicki Terrell and soloist was Erwen Ehrenhard.

The casket remained at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa until 11 A.M. Friday when it was taken to the church. The Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa was in charge of arrangements.
