Daughter of Franklin and Elizabeth Walker Pepper. Wife of Joe A. Stewart. According to the 1900 Winn Parish Census, they were married in 1896 and she was born in November, 1878. On that census, they appear to be living next door to her maternal grandfather Flournoy Walker and her husband's parents William and Elizabeth Stewart. She is listed as 1 year old on the 1880 Winn Parish Census. According to the Louisiana State Death Certificate Index, Bertha died March 14, 1955 in Winn Parish.

Last Rites For Mrs. Joe Stewart Of Dodson Mar. 15


Funeral services for Mrs. Joe A. Stewart, 76, of Dodson, who died early Monday in a Winnfield hospital, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 1955, at the New Hope Methodist Church, with the Rev. Virgil Taylor officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Buchanan and Rev. Phillips.

Burial was in the New Hope Cemetery under direction of Edmonds Funeral Home. Acting as pallbearers were J. L. Mathews, Woodson Goolsby, Enos Murphy, Billie Johnson, Fred Roark, and Carthal Payne.

The deceased, a native of Winn Parish, was the former Miss Bertha Peppers. She is survived by two sons, Preston and Ellis Stewart of Dodson; three daughters, Mrs. P. M. Brewer, Dodson, Mrs. Henry King, West Monroe, and Mrs. Bill Evans, Atlanta; one brother, two sisters, 13 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
