He was the eldest son of John Adam and Comfort Jane (Williams) Grokenbarger and brother of Edward Otis Groken, Charlotte Mann, and Harriet Aurora Grokenbarger. John enlisted as a private on August 27, 1864, at the age of 18. On September 23, 1864, he enlisted in Company D, 177th Infantry, Ohio Regiment and mustered out June 24, 1865, at Greensboro, North Carolina. In 1870 he was living in Cherry Valley, Ohio. John married Bernice Freelove Gowdy in 1872 and, in 1880, they were living in Castle Township, Kansas. They moved to Perry, Ohio, by 1910.
