Mary was a daughter of Elizabeth Jones and Charles Oliver Miller, She graduated from Elmer L Meyers High School in 1941.

On May 26, 1942, she married Graydon Hoyt at the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church in Wilkes-Barre. The couple had four children: Graydon Charles, David Ricky, Ivan Ernest, and Alysia Ann. She was employed as a teacher associate and arts-and-crafts instructor by the Mountain Top School for Exceptional Children.
