Namesake was Freeborn Garrettson an American clergyman, who entered the Methodist ministry in 1775 and travelled extensively to evangelize in several states.

The photo on the porch of his house is an elderly lady seated, Maria Hyde, 2nd wife. Freeborn Garrettson Hibbard is standing, and the young lady to the left is Ellen Hinckley Hyde, their niece that was like a daughter to them. The children do not belong to Freeborn or his niece, who was never married.

Freeborn and his 2nd wife Maria were part of the Underground Railroad in helping Sojourner Truth. Freeborn introduced her to contacts that allowed Sojourner, a former slave to spread her outspoken advocacy for abolition, temperance, and civil and women's rights in the nineteenth century. Maria Hyde Hibbard was the 2nd President of the WCTU in the state of New York.

The Rev. Freeborn Garrettson Hibbard was the son of Rev. Billy & Sybil Russ Hibbard, and married 1st Mary Whipple and 2nd Maria Hyde.

His father, Billy Hibbard, was a clergyman of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The son entered the ministry of the same church in the New York conference at the age of eighteen, before he had completed his college course, and continued in this work, chiefly in western New York , from 1830 till 1856, when he was elected editor of the "Northern Christian Advocate,"printed in Auburn, New York. In 1860 he resumed the pastorate, and became presiding elder of the Geneva district. Dr. Hibbard's principal works are "Christian Baptism, its Subjects, and its Import, mode, Efficacy, and Relative Order" (New York, 1845); "Geography and History of Palestine" (1851); "The Psalms, chronologically Arranged, with Historical Introductions, and a General Introduction to the Whole Book" (1856); and "The Religion of Childhood, or Children in their Relation to Native Depravity, to the Atonement, to the Family, and to the Church" (1864). He also edited the "Sermons" (1869) and "Works" (1872), and published a "Biography" of Bishop Leonidas L. Hamline (1880). The commentary on the Psalms (1882) is in the Whedon series of "Commentaries on the Old Testament" was written by him. He also published a "History of the late East Genesee conference" (1887)

Freeborn's testimony in his own words...
"I was alone in the field one beautiful day in early spring. The sky clear, the sun glorious, the happy birds and all nature, quick and springing into life, were but the symbols of my soul's experience. It was a glorious day within and without. I can never forget that day. I shall never enjoy a happier until I walk the fields of paradise. 'What is it that you want?' seemed to be asked me. 'I want victory over all known sin' 'Have you not got it? 'Yes,' I replied. 'What else?' 'I want power to perform all the known will of God.' 'Have you not got it?' 'Yes, praise God!' 'What else do you want?' 'I want to love God with all my soul.' 'Do you not?' 'Yes; glory to God!'' Well, have you not, then, received the blessing you have asked for?' And my bursting heart answered, 'Yes, I have. Blessed be God, my prayers are answered I will not doubt!' And never from that hour have I doubted for one moment the reality of the work there attested. That was the 'beginning of years' to my soul." -- Guide to Holiness, April, 1867.
