John Alton Moldstad died on December 15, 2008, at Bloomington Hospital. He was born on May 21, 1923, in Minot, North Dakota, the son of John and Alma Moldstad. He served over 40 years in the field of education, first as a teacher of mathematics and Audio Visual Director of the New Ulm, MN School Corporation, and later he taught at Indiana University in the Instructional Systems Technology (formerly audio-visual) field for 37 years before retiring as professor emeritus in l989.

He graduated from Minot High School in 1941, and entered Minot State Teachers college, where he was awarded a Kellogg Foundation Fellowship in l942. During World War II he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was sent to Officers' training in Meteorology at Carleton College. When that program was closed unexpectedly he was reassigned to the U.S. Signal Corps for a three-year tour of duty in England and Belgium.

At the end of the war he returned home to enroll at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a B.S. degree in Education with a major in mathematics, and began teaching in New Ulm.

Three years later he came to Indiana University, where he enrolled in a masters' degree program in audio-visual education offered by the School of Education. Upon completion of this in l950, he immediately began working toward a doctoral degree, and in l953 completed a double major in educational administration and audio-visual education.

In l955 he was appointed an assistant professor of education and progressed to full professor in l966. During this time he served as director of the Agency for International Development at the Indiana University Audio-Visual Center Training Program in media for foreign student from fifteen developing countries. He directed advanced Media Institutes and served as a consultant to many training programs. He helped formulate the curriculum for the newly-emerging area of educational technology. He developed and taught 10 different graduate instructional systems technology courses. He was called diligent and very successful in extolling and demonstrating the effectiveness of employing media in instructional situations and was respected by students and colleagues for his skillful classroom use of all aspects of educational technology.

He conducted a number of half-day workshops in many Indiana school corporations. He also presented research reports at U.S. state conferences and gave keynote addresses at 3 international conferences, wrote research monographs and edited several magazines in his field, and wrote articles published in numerous books, monographs and scholarly journals.

Survivors include his wife Katherine (nee Geving), whom he met while both were studying toward advanced degrees at Indiana University. They married in 1951. Throughout their 57 years of married life, she shared his interest in the audio-visual field and his love of bridge, golf, ballroom dancing and travel. Other survivors include their two children, daughter Janet (Stephen) Wells of Ann Arbor, MI, and son Richard (Ardith Corts) of Valparaiso, IN; and four grandchildren, Jason and Michael Wells and Lindsay and Natalie Moldstad. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His brother-in-law, Theodore Goll of Long Beach, CA, and several cousins in Minot, ND, also survive.

Upon retirement, John found time to travel, paint, create stained glass work and to golf. He held memberships in the Bloomington Elks Lodge, the American Legion, the Bloomington Ballroom Dance Club, University Club of IU, Annuitants Association, and was a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church in Bloomington.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at the First United Methodist Church in Bloomington.
