James Walter Freeman (sn 515897) enlisted in the Marine Corps on December 3, 1942. Before joining the service, he lived in Fairview, NC.

On September 8, 1943, Freeman arrived in California and joined Able Company, 24th Marines. He was promoted to PFC in January 1944, shortly before shipping out to the battle of Namur.

Freeman survived Namur, and landed on Saipan with the company. On July 8, he was hit in the legs by a piece of flying metal, and was evacuated to the USS Relief. His wounds were not life threatening, and he returned to duty on August 4, 1944, while the company was fighting on Tinian.

Freeman was promoted to Corporal after Tinian, and made the landing on Iwo Jima. He was killed on February 25, 1945, when a shell fragment smashed into his chest. Corporal Freeman was buried in Grave 1603, Row 33, Plot 1 of the 4th Marine Division Cemetery.
