Sperling Garrett was the son of Clarence Garrett and Mamie E. McCall of Bay Minette, Alabama. He was born on January 9, 1924, grew up in Alabama, and was attending Graceland College in Iowa when the United States entered World War 2.

Garrett enlisted in the Marine Corps on February 3, 1943. After serving at a guard post in Hawthorne, Nevada, he joined Company A, 24th Marines at Camp Pendleton, California.

PFC Garrett saw combat on Namur (Marshall Islands) and on Saipan (Mariana Islands). He died in action on 16 June 1944.

He was buried in the Fourth Marine Division Cemetery on Saipan, and was returned to a private cemetery after the war.
