Davis Vernon Kruse (sn 485603) enlisted in the Marine Corps in January, 1942. He was assigned to Able Company, 24th Marines as a rifleman, and saw action on Namur and Saipan.

On July 5, Kruse volunteered for a patrol to rescue civilians from a cave between the lines on Saipan. The patrol was ambushed, and Davis Kruse was shot through the head and killed, either by a Japanese sniper or machine gunner.

Kruse was buried in Grave 830, Row 4, Plot 4, 4 MarDiv Cemetery. After the war, his remains were returned to Iowa and buried in Fairview Cemetery.
