Mrs. Brookover was born to Samuel Franklin Eberhart and Britie Adelma (Della) Farmer Eberhart on the family farm near Bracken. She was married to Wilbur Bone Brookover on June 21, 1937, in Tyco, Ohio.
She received her B.A. degree from Manchester College (in North Manchester, Indiana) in 1933 and also studied at the University of Wisconsin and Michigan State University. After graduating from college, Mrs. Brookover taught music and English in Roanoke (1933-35), Cromwell (1935-38) and Huntington Township (1938-39). Mrs. Brookover worked as an interviewer on her husband's dissertation and for the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) on the Growth of American Families Study, the first important study on fertility in the United States.
When Mr. Brookover entered the United States Navy in April 1943, Mrs. Brookover returned to Huntington County, to live with her parents during his training and, later accompanied him to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Seattle, Washington, where they remained until discharge in 1946. The family moved to East Lansing. Mrs. Brookover returned to teaching vocal music in 1951, in rural schools in Ingham and Clinton counties. She retired in the mid-1970s, which allowed her to travel widely with her husband, including trips to Turkey, Greece, Russia and Sweden, and to serve on a variety of university and community commissions and committees, which included serving on the East Lansing Heritage Commission, as president of the Faculty Folk at M.S.U., on the Council of Elders of The Peoples Church, and on the boards of the League of Women Voters, the East Lansing Women's Club, the YWCA, the Friends of the East Lansing Library, and the Girl Scouts.
Mrs. Brookover is the author of a history of Post World War II temporary housing for faculty at Michigan State University entitled Life in Faculty Quonset Village on Cherry Lane-1946.
She is survived by three children, Linda Anne Brookover Bourque, Los Angeles, California, Thomas Wilbur Brookover, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and George Michael Brookover, East Lansing, Michigan; two daughters-in-law, Cicely Bates Brookover and Patricia Hillman Brookover; three grandchildren, Eliza Failey Brookover of Haslett, Michigan, Samuel Andrew Brookover of Lansing, Michigan, and Jacob Thomas Brookover (Elisha) of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
