THE FRESNO BEE, THE REPUBLICAN
FRIDAY DECEMBER 26, 1941

SAILOR BELIEVED LOST IN ACTION REPORTED SAFE
Mr. and Mrs. Jake Lackey of the Kearney Vineyard Company spent Christmas Day quietly yesterday. For them the day was not the cause for rejoicing as it was in other Fresno district homes. Their son, Edwin Harold Lackey, 20, was reported as missing by the navy department last week.
This morning, however, the gloom was dissipated as another official message from the navy informed the Fresnans their son, "Has been accounted for and undoubtedly will communicate with you within a few days."
The telegram revealing Lackey was "missing" was received December 18th. No details were given.
Today's message was apologetic for the sorrow the first had brought, but said the "navy is pleased and happy to announce his safety."
The elder Lackey is employed as a laborer at the Kearney Estate.
Edwin Lackey
Edwin Lackey passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, December 14, 2008, after a battle with cancer, never losing his spirit and surrounded by family. Ed was born on March 11, 1922 in Britton, Oklahoma, the son of the late Jake and Lydia Lackey. He served in the United States Navy and was a survivor of the strike on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He had a long career as a Fresno City Police Officer and retired in 1972. He then went into construction with his friend the late Mac McGinty building and refurbishing homes including building his residence in the Ranchos in Madera. Ed loved to fish and spent many summers in Fort Bragg, California, where he introduced his children and grandchildren to the sea, boating, and how to catch that big salmon or ling cod. Ed was a "larger than life" personality with many of his own sayings that will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him. Those left to treasure their memories of Ed are his wife of 44 years, Juanita; and their eight children together, John Lackey and his wife Kathy of Santa Cruz, David Lackey of Cincinnati, Oh., Charles Lackey and his wife Sharon of Bakersfield, Noeleen Hetrick and her husband Bill of Redding, Robin Tong and her husband Calvin of Capitola, Faun Horton and her husband Bob of Fresno, Francis Schreiner and her husband Kurt of San Carlos, and Lizzie Crookham and her husband Mike of Monterey; sisters, Jean Barrow and Ruth Baker and her husband Howard; brothers, Gerald Lackey and his wife Cathy, all of Madera, and Robert Lackey and his wife Jane of Bakersfield, along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A Graveside Service will be held at Belmont Memorial Park on Friday, December 19, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. Remembrances to the Saint Agnes Hospice and-or the Ranchos-Hills Seniors, Inc. in Madera may be made in Ed's Memory.
