RICHARD V. ABBOTT JR., 87
Baker and former Millville business owner

Richard V. Abbott Jr., 87, died on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at home as a result of lung cancer.

Mr. Abbott, affectionately known by all as "Poppi," was born and raised in Millville. Mr. Abbott served in the Army as a staff sergeant in World War II with the 319th Quartermaster Bakery Company in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was the chief baker for 31 months in the South Pacific Theater, where he baked bread in the field baking company., requisitioned supplies and directed 120 men preparing the baking of bread.

After the war, he and his brother, Robert, owned and operated Abbott's Bakery from 1946 to 1995. Their bakery provided the community with a wide variety of delicious baked goods, which were produced almost solely by the two brothers. Retirement was never a desire of Mr. Abbott. Work and family were his life. From 1995 to 2008 he worked for his son, Rick, at Industrial Glassware. He was often doing errands and was seen around town in his bright red truck. When his son opened Winfield's Restaurant in 2003, "Poppi" went back to his baking and helped with making the bread. He worked with the restaurant's pastry chef through 2008, until his health issues prevented it.

Mr. Abbott was a multi talented guy. He was mechanically inclined and able to fix, build and repair many things. He was also a talent on the drums. As a young man, he played at many of the local spots. In addition, he had a love for flying. He was a licensed pilot and actually rebuilt, owned, and flew a Piper Cub Super Cruiser PA-12. He attended Millville Schools, took a correspondence course at Seibel Institute of Technology in Chicago and attended the American Baking Institute in Chicago.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, Frances (Chiari), he is survived by his five children and their spouses, Donna Hinckley and husband Tom of Somers Point, Richard (Rick) V. Abbott III and wife Lois of Millville, Bruce Abbott of Millville, Kathleen Carselle and husband John of Mason, Ohio, and Carol Pozzi and husband David of Medford. Other survivors are his nine loving grandchildren and one great-grandson, along with his brother, Robert, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Christy Funeral Home, 11 W. Broad St., Millville. Funeral services will be held at Christy's at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Dr. Steven Shuster officiating.
