Artist. He was educated at the Slade Art school in London, England, where he won a scholarship and the Poynter Prize. He later studied in Paris, France under artist Jean-Pual Laurens. On returning to England he set up a studio in Fulham, London. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1878 and also showed at the Paris salon. He worked as an illustrator and engraver for "The Graphic" and "The Illustrated London News" and undertook assignments in Greece in 1896 and in India between 1902 and 1911. Among other books he provided illustrations for Oscar Wilde's "The Happy Prince and Other Tales". His work as a painter consisted largely of portraits, mythological subjects and genre painting. His painting "The Lifeboat" was used to advertise Pears soap. Examples of his work can be seen in the National Portrait Gallery, London, Manchester Art Gallery and the Lady Lever Art Gallery. He continued to live in London until his death.
