Newspaper article about M. T. Barksdale:

"M.T. Barksdale was born January 5, 1851 in Talbot County, Georgia, a descendant of Wm. Barksdale, who came from England to Virginia before the Revolutionary War. All the Barksdales in the United States are his descendants. Terrell Barksdale, the grandfather of M.T., moved from Virginia to Georgia and married Miss Sarah Harvey. Eight children were born to them. Clinton, the youngest, was married to Miss Effie McCreary, to them three boys and one girl were born, M.T. being the oldest boy, and only surviving child. At the age of nineteen he was married to Miss Mollie McKenney, who is his faithful companion to the present. To them eleven children have been born.

At the age of sixteen he was much interested in matters of religion, and tried hard at the "mourner's bench" in a Methodist revival to "get religion," After his failure he heard the Primitive Baptist preach that a sinner could not do one thing in the matter of their salvation. He concluded that they were right, for he tried and failed. He hoped he was one of the "elect" and expected the Lord to reveal Himself to him in due time.

In 1880 he moved to Alabama. In 1882 he heard S.S. Landrum, a Christian preach. He soon learned from a study of the Bible there was something he "must do." August 25, 1882, he was baptized into the church of Christ by C.J. Hamilton. In 1883 he moved to Clay County, Alabama. In 1884 he began preaching. In that and adjoining counties he preached for seven years. In 1897 he moved to Northeast Mississippi and preached ten years. For four years he lived in Itawamba County. Most of his preaching has been in destitute places. He has established many congregations. Failing health caused him to move to Sabinal, Texas, November, 1907, where he lives on his farm one mile from town. He preaches most of his time."
