Mrs. Maria Frances Swisher was born at Bannack, Montana, November 19, 1865, in the heart of the Blackfoot Indian country. Her father was Joshua VanDruff, a native of Waynesburg, Pa., and her mother was from Boxley, Indiana., her maiden name being Mary Hughes Lynch.

Maria VanDruff grew to womanhood in the beautiful country about Valley Falls. She graduated from the Campbell Normal University and took up teaching. In 1889 she was married to Charles Swisher, president of the Salina Normal University, of Salina, Kansas.

To this union two children were born, Ruth, wife of F. E. Wells, and Maud, who died in early womanhood.
