He and WO Gaétan Roberge were killed along with an Afghan National Police officer and an Afghan interpreter after a bomb detonated while they were conducting security operations. Four other Canadian soldiers and another local interpreter were injured in the incident, which occurred in the Panjwaii district, approximately 25 kilometres west of Kandahar City.
Sgt. Kruse was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick and spent most of his 19-year career at CFB Gagetown. His awards and decorations include Canadian Forces Decoration (CD); Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal; Special Service Medal. He was on his fourth overseas tour of duty and was looking forward to a transfer back to New Brunswick. He is survived by his wife, Jill, and their three daughters, his mother Penelope Kruse, brothers Christian Kruse and Timothy Kruse (Simone), along with other family and friends.

A total of 106 soldiers and one diplomat have died since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002.
