TO DAD
by Kathryn Eleanor Whitaker

His life was uneventful;
The money that he did not have
Lies still within the rich, black earth
Upon his widow's farm.

His talents were not those of skill;
His art decays, discovered not.
His eyeas can roam no more along the wavy wheat,
Upon the shooting corn -
High to the fluttering pigeons on the barn.

His love was not romantic;
He ate her meals without applause - without a pause
For tenderness. He drove his herd to pasture.
A hickory lash within his hand.

His soul was not religious.
He cursed without a worry,
He spat between his teeth,
Avoiding beyond hope the church upon the hill.
Though still,
A little child forever trotted after him,
A little hand relaxing often in his grimy paw.

Atimes his face would break from stony silence,
Into a rhapsody of smile - And then, some age - old hymn might
Burst from his bewhiskered jaw.
His land he tilled with horse and plow,
And no one ever knew his dreams.

But now that he is gone, it seems
The horse and plow and child and sod
Were art and love and hope - and God
Was not so far away.
Has come to me a strange new thought, this day;
I loved him so, as few, I understand,
I was the little child who held his hand.
