Altdorf Man Drowns at Port this Morning
CARRIED TO HIS
DEATH AS HE
SLIPS OFF DAM —
JACK FORBES, ELECTRICIAN,
ESCAPES AS HE CLINGS TO
RAILING TO MAINTAIN HIS
BALANCE
Carl Arnold, 33, single, an employee
in the wood room of the
Nekoosa-Edwards Paper company's
Port Edwards mill, was drowned in
the Wisconsin river just below the
Port Edwards dam at 10 o'clock this
morning.
A call was immediately sent to
the fire department of this city for
the pullmotor and the resuscitation
machine was rushed to the scene of
the drowning. A crew of men was
dispatched from the mill to search
for the body until it was found
shortly before 12 o'clock this noon.
—River Rises—
Mr. Arnold in company with Jack
Forbes, electrician at the Port Edwards
mill, walked across the dam
a short time before the tragedy.
Water was not passing over the
structure when they went over, but
upon returning the river had risen
to a point where the stream was
forced over the dam.
—Slip on Planks—
The men removed their shoes and
attempted to cross back over the
dam. Very little water was passing
over the apron when they started,
but as they neared the center of
the frame structure a more terrific
current was forced over and resulted
in their slipping on the planks.
Forbes was able to grasp a railing
and hold his balance, but Arnold lost
his balance and was carried into the
river by the current. Scars on his
face show that he must have struck
a rock when he plunged into the
stream.
Officials of the company state
that the victim was slightly able to
swim.
Mr. Arnold had been on his vacation
and had just returned from the
state convention of the American
Legion at Wausau last evening. He
was not working for the company
at the time of the fatal accident,
but was still continuing his vacation.
He has been employed at the
mill for the past four or five years.
He has a brother, Anton, living
in Port Edwards and employed by
the paper company as truck driver.
The body was removed to the
Krohn and Ernser Funeral Home
pending funeral arrangements.
—Parents Live In Altdorf—
The victim is a son of Mr. and
Mrs. Anton Arnold living near Altdorf
in the town of Seneca. Besides
them he is survived by five brothers
and five sisters.

Carl Arnold Funeral
Saturday at Altdorf

The funeral of Carl Arnold, who
was drowned at Port Edwards yes-
terday morning, will be held Satur-
day morning at nine o'clock at the
St. Joseph's Catholic church in Alt-
dorf. Rev. C. W. Gille will officiate.
Burial will be made in the Altdorf
cemetery.
Mr. Arnold had just returned
from the Legion convention at Wau-
sau and was still on his vacation
when the tragedy occurred.
He in company with Jack Forbes,
an electrician at the mill, had cross-
ed the dam at Port Edwards at a
time when there was no water flow-
ing over, but upon their return the
river had risen to a point where it
was forced over the dam and the
young men removed their shoes to
prevent slipping on the planks of the
apron.
Mr. Arnold was unable to keep a
foothold in such a strong current
and he fell into the water. From the
bruise on his left cheek it is thought
that he struck his head on a stone
when he plunged from the dam to
the water 12 feet below. A watch
that he carried stopped at 9:24 a. m.,
but the body was not recovered un-
til just before noon.
The tragedy victim was able to
swim only slightly.
