Deceased Name: Scott E. Knouf : FAST-FOOD WORKER SHOT TO DEATH Attempted robbery ends in death of supervisor at Karl Road restaurant
A worker at a North Side fast-food restaurant died yesterday after he was shot late Saturday night by a man who fired through the pickup window in an apparent attempted robbery.
Scott E. Knouf, 27, was a shift supervisor in training for Wendy's and had worked for the chain for six weeks. He died at Riverside Methodist Hospital yesterday morning of a gunshot wound to his upper body, according to police.
Wendy's spokesman Denny Lynch said the dining room at the restaurant, 4326 Karl Rd., was closed just before 11 p.m. Saturday when a man tried to enter through the pickup window.
The suspect "was not successful and apparently shot at Scott Knouf, who had his hands in the air," Lynch said. The suspect fled without any money.
Detectives interviewed employees but no one saw the shooting, Columbus detective James Gravett said. The crime appears to be random, he said.
A gunshot also grazed the head of another employee -- Ehab A. Kostandy, 53. He was treated at the scene, police said.
Two other employees were working but were not injured.
Lynch said several videotapes from security cameras were given to police.
Police described the shooter as a black man in his early 20s, with medium to light complexion and about 6 feet tall.
Knouf's death hit the Wendy's family hard.
"We're in shock," Lynch said. "We're fairly emotional about losing an employee in such a senseless tragedy.
"Scott had his hands in the air. He was not showing any signs of ill will toward the suspect."
Knouf's death is the 80th homicide in Columbus this year. In all of 2002, 81 people were killed.
Wendy's will offer grief counseling to employees, especially those who witnessed the shooting.
The restaurant, Lynch said, has been in the Northland area since the 1970s. It is considered a community gathering place.
"From everything we've seen or heard . . . there's no rhyme or reason" for the crime, he said.
The restaurant was closed yesterday and will remain closed as Knouf's mother -- expected to arrive from Iowa last night -- completes funeral arrangements.
"We are not focusing on when the store will be open; we're focusing on grieving for the loss of a valued employee," Lynch said.
Franklin County Coroner Brad Lewis said his office would perform an autopsy on Knouf today.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Columbus police at 614-645-4730.
