John Ewing "Doc" Reed was born on July 14, 1911 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He attended California State Teachers College on a football scholarship, where he met his wife, Jeanne, who passed away in 1968. Together they raised two children, Mary Lou, born in 1941 and Thomas, born in 1950. After graduation from college he taught school until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He was commissioned a Lieutenant and served as the Executive Officer on a supply ship that supported allied troops fighting in the South Pacific until his discharge in 1946. After the war, and recovering from illnesses contracted during his service in the South Pacific, he returned to the Pittsburgh area. Using the GI Bill "Doc" enrolled in the University of Pittsburgh and was awarded his PhD in Education in 1955. Following his graduation from Pitt, he worked as an elementary school principal, and a Superintendent of Schools, retiring in 1976 from his position as the Assistant Superintendent. He passed away in September of 1983, survived by his two children and five grandchildren.
