In 1854 he married Miss Margaret L. Suits: "To this union were born sixteen children eight of whom, together with forty-seven grandchildren,and forty-one great grandchildren, still survive Bro. Ridling."
He enlisted in the Union Army on November 25,1863 in Dallas, Polk county, Arkansas and with a squad of men he had organized was mustered in on January 6, 1864 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was assigned to Company G, 2nd Regiment, Arkansas Infantry, and was immediatly promoted to sergeant.
His description at the time gives his age as 50,his height 5 feet nine inches, complexion dark, eyes grey, hair black, his occupation as farmer. Because of his support for the Union cause, his family had to flee to Little Rock for the duration of the war.
