CIVIL WAR VETERAN ANSWERS LAST ROLL CALL
John Wesley McKee, one of the few surviving veterans of the Civil War in this city and also in the county, passed away at his home on Shipping street, Friday night, February 15, after several days illness.
Mr. McKee was a resident of this county during his entire long useful life. He was born at Yorkville, Dearborn County, Ind., June 16 1842, the son of Henry and Phoebe Palmer McKee. He came to Lawrenceburg in his youth and this city has been his home for many years.
October 7 1861 at the age of nineteen, Mr. McKee answered the call of his country and enlisted in the Union army. He was mustered into service at Indianapolis November 1 1861 as a private in Company H, Second Indiana Calvary. He served with distinction and gallantry, participating in many of the major and minor engagements of the conflict. He fought at Shiloh, Corinth, Perryville, and a number of other battles with the army of the West. When Sherman made his famous march to the sea, Mr. McKee was in his command and took part in the battles of Resca, Ackwarth, Newman and Atlanta. Later he was confined to the hospital at Terre Haute for a period of three months and following this again rejoined his regiment serving until July 28 1865, being honorably discharged at Nashville, Tenn.
Mr. McKee was a cooper by trade and was employed by the Bauer Cooperage Plant from 1880 until several years before this plant ceased operation, when he quit work on account of advancing age.
June 1 1876, he was united in marriage to Margaret (McCullough) Anderson at Lawrenceburg. To this union were born five children, two sons and three daughters.
Surviving are his widow, one son Chas. McKee of Greendale, one stepson Gilbert Anderson of Lawrenceburg, three daughters, Mrs. Sarah Crute of Connersville, Mrs. Mollie Colligan of Cincinnati, and Miss Nevada McKee who resides at home; one sister Mrs. Effie Brown of this city and a half sister, Mrs. Mary Hammer of Noblesville, Ind. One son, John, died in infancy and one brother, Jonas McKee and one sister, Mrs. Nancy Sullivan, have preceded him in death.
Mr. McKee was a member of the Huff Post of the G.A.R. from its organization until the post was disbanded a few years ago.
Funeral services in charge of the Spanish American War veterans and Rev. C. W. Townsend were held at the Baptist church, of which the deceased was a member for thirty years, Tuesday at 2 pm. Burial in Greendale Cemetery.
