Juanita is the daughter of John Jay Hardy and Lydia Ensign Valencia. Juanita's father who was a sickly man, died a month prior to her birth. Lydia named the baby for the deceased father giving her the Spanish feminine version of John, Juanita. This kept in line with Lydia's roots as her father was a Don from one of the old California Spanish Families.

After the death of John Hardy, Lydia took her two young daughters to Utah to live near her Aunt Clarissa Moses Cannon. Suffering from ill health, Lydia died in 1879 leaving her two young girls in the care of the Cannon family in Bluffdale, Utah.

Juanita married William Dummer and later in life moved back to California where she died in 1952 in Santa Clara.
