Funeral services were held Wednesday at the First Methodist church in Colesburg for Merle Holthaus, 40, who died Sunday evening, April 28 at a Manchester hospital. Burial was made in the Zion cemetery west of Colesburg. The Rev. George Youtzy officiated and graveside rites were conducted by the members of the Colesburg American Legion Post. Taps were played by Robert Snyder and Karen Wernke.

Merle Holthaus was born August 19, 1916 in the Immanuel community, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Holthaus. He attended the Colesburg schools and the Immanuel Methodist church where he became a member when he was 12 years old. He served 33 months during W. W. II. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in New Guinea and was hospitalized in Australia for many months.

He returned to Colesburg for 18 months and then went back to Newcastle, Australia, where he was married to Betty Littlejohn in 1947. He was employed by the Standard Oil company. He returned to Colesburg in 1948 accompanied by his wife and infant son, Terry. For the past few years he has been employed by the John Deere company in Dubuque. Mr. Holthus was a member of the First Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Colesburg fire department.

Surviving are his wife, Betty; two children, Terry, 9, and Peggy, 5; his father, Ben; five brothers, Marvin, Leland and Stanley of Colesburg; Harley of Rockford and Burdette of Martelle; three sisters, Mrs. George Crawford of Belvidere, Ill.; Mrs. Ruben Daake of Charles City and Mrs. Stanley Ross of Colesburg. His mother preceded him in death.
