While the ship that he was stationed aboard on (USS Bache; DD-470) was on a picket & screening assignment off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, several dive-bomber planes made an attack on the ship, yet only one of the planes was successful via kamikaze, killing him along with 40 other sailors & officers.
