9 July 1944: The 5th Division landed in France at Utah Sugar Red Beach, in the St. Mere Eglise area, first assigned to relieve the 1st Division of the Normandy D-Day landings of June 6th-(a significant turning point in WWII which led to the restoration of the German occupied French Republic); Battled in the front lines at Caumont…

July-August 1944: France: Hot, full of shell-shattered towns, dead cows, mines, a stench in the air, with the constant sound of planes overhead & artillery fire; Advancing slowly with heavy resistance across France...on their way to Germany…

8 August 1944: Company K helped capture the south railway bridge, intact, before the Germans could reach it and blow it up, giving direct access into the city of Angers, the principal exit point for the fleeing German troops...

9 August 1944: The chateau of Chateaubriand and the ridge on the south of Angers were secured.
