William Robert Lesley was born in Auldearn, Nairn, Scotland to parents John Lessly and Isolbel Urquhart Lessley (Lesley-Leslie history pub. 2003, page 214)

This early permanent settlement in the Big Sandy Valley was named for Revolutionary War veteran William Robert Lesley (1729-1802). Lesley moved to this site at John's Creek circa 1790. His son Robert joined him shortly before his father's death. William and Robert are buried in separate plots on the original settlement site (on the Pub-Links Golf Course at Lower Johns Creek). Presented by Leslie/Lesley Family Association.

The land settled by William Robert Lesley and his son Robert about 1790 extended down both sides of Johns Creek from about the mouth of Caney Creek to the mouth of Sycamore Creek.

Located:
Lower Wolfpen Hollow on Sycamore Creek near the present-day Gulnare post office and less than a mile from Johns Creek.

The grave site is located at the Mountain Pub-Links Golf Course, 26 Hurt Branch Rd., (Lower Johns Creek) Pikeville, KY 41501 a steep hike uphill from the fifth hole.

William Robert Lesley married Elizabeth Buchanan. Born 1735 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Died 1786 Montgomery Co., Virginia (burial unknown). Children of William Robert Lesley and Elizabeth Buchanan are:

1. Nancy Leslie McGuire Elkins. Born 1756 Augusta Co., Virginia. Died 14 AUG 1841 Logan Co., West Virginia.
2. Elizabeth Leslie. Born 1758 Augusta, Bluestone, Virginia, USA. Died 1837.
3. John Leslie. Born 23 OCT 1760 Augusta, Bluestone, Virginia, USA. Died 7 MAY 1841 Lawrence, Kentucky, USA.
4. Robert Leslie. Born 25 OCT 1763 Augusta Co., Virginia. Died 1822 Pike County, Kentucky.

NOTE: The Lesley-Leslie surname spelling changed from family to family over the years. When William Robert came to the United States it was spelled "Lasley/Lesley" but over the years "some" family lines changed the spelling to "Leslie". On family headstones the spelling sometimes changes also, i.e., Pharmer Lesley's wife Mary Jane Lesley's headstone refers to her husband as Pharmer "Lesley" but Pharmer's "newer" military headstone spells his name Pharmer "Leslie". Thus, in searching for Lesley-Leslie family on FAG you will need to search both surname spellings.
