He enlisted in company H, 23rd Regiment, Michigan Vol. Infantry, Aug 12, 1862. Mustered Sep 12, 1862 (this regiment became part of the Army of the Ohio). Mustered out at Salisbury, N.C. Jun 18, 1865. He was a blacksmith by trade (which is how, I suspect, he met my great Aunt Lovica, as her father was also a blacksmith living in the same area and had been in the Army of the Ohio during the war; indeed, they had both been at the Siege of Atlanta together). David Jerome, who eventually became Governor of Michigan, commanded the 23rd Michigan Infantry.
