Growing up, we lived with an angel
My sister and my brother and me.
It never even crossed our minds back then,
But what else but an angel could she be?
Her hands were kind of withered
And her feet never walked upon the ground.
Her legs were like toothpicks, her knees were always bent,
And her wheelchair often made a funny sound.
As kids we sat around her on the floor,
For a story only she could tell the best,
About a fairy princess or 3 pigs on the run,
And wolves and frogs and dragons and the rest.
We sometimes wondered why she lived at our house,
For far and near there lived a lot of kin.
Then we learned that Mama made a vow she'd never leave her,
When their mother died and she was only 10.
Although she had a family of her own,
Mama always kept the precious vow.
And Daddy stood behind her every step of the way,
Saying we'd always get by some how.
It happened one cold day in the winter,
We got the news that Vera Mae did die.
We all knew she didn't have much longer on this earth,
And we'd already said our last good byes.
She's still around and I often see her.
And she's walking like she never could before.
And her withered hands now velvet, they do touch me,
And she says "Honey, don't you worry no more."
Vera Mae, sweet Vera Mae,
The angel God sent us from above.
We will always miss being with you,
But we will always live with your love.
