Helen Rose Wathen, 96, Bardstown, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at Colonial Health and Rehab Center. She was born Aug. 18, 1911, in Springfield. She was a homemaker, a former employee of Colonial Nursing Home and St. Joseph School Cafeteria, a member of the Plum Run Homemakers and St. Joseph Parish. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Leo Wathen, Sr.; three sons, Joseph Leo Wathen Jr., Joseph Donald Wathen, and Jerry Wathen; her parents, Robert Lee and Regina Simms Clements; and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include five sons, Harold Wathen, Jimmy Wathen and Billy Wathen, all of Bardstown, Mike Wathen, Cedar Grove and Tommy Wathen, Largo, FL; five daughters, Carolyn Ballard, Flo Hobbs, Lois Ballard, Martha Bickett, all of Bardstown, and Margaret Deviney, Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.; 32 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Joe Clements, Bardstown; a sister, Margaret Mudd, Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Hammer will officiate. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6 p.m. by Deacon John Hamilton. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Joseph School Building Fund or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
