Rhode Island Governor from 1880 to 1883. Alfred Littlefield began working at an early age, first in a mill in Warwick, and then in a dry goods house, going on to partner with his brother in the manufacture of thread, and later serving as director of a cloth company. He served in the Rhode Island Militia as a colonel for five years. His political career began as a member of the Lincoln Town Council for four years. He was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives for two years and served in the Rhode Island Senate for two years following that. He was elected to the governor's office in 1880. He received more votes than the other two candidates, but not a majority, so the state legislature decided the election. He served for three terms. He worked to update the state’s educational system to prepare residents of the state for the development of manufacturing, and to create a state industrial school for impoverished children. After leaving the governorship. he returned to business, and was president of a bank, a gas company and a street railway.
