William Pettyjohn enlisted in the Marine Corps after the outbreak of World War Two. He attended boot camp on Parris Island, and specialized in the Browning M1917 heavy machine gun. He was assigned to a crew in Dog Company, 24th Marines.

Pettyjohn served in the battle of Namur, after which he and his crew were transferred to Able Company of the same regiment. He fought on Saipan with his new company.

On July 25, as the gunners helped fend off a Japanese counterattack, Pettyjohn was badly wounded. He was evacuated from the island of Tinian and hospitalized until his eventual discharge on July 2, 1945.

After the war, Pettyjohn returned to Marietta, Georgia, where he died in 2004.
